Scope and Content

The publication gives an historical account of a gang of Jewish thieves who reached infamy through large burglaries in Berlin and other provinces, during the years 1826-1831. They originally came from the town of Betsche near Posen where they had settled in 1800. A collection of lock picks including their use and production is described in detail. In addition, the terms for various kind of thievery are explained. The biography of the thief Josef Adolf Rosenthal born in 1778 is given as an example of a career criminal.
