Scope and Content
The publication gives an introduction to the worldview of the antique nations and their tolerance towards other religions and nations. The only people they were hostile to were the Jews. The early Christians were especially antisemitic. Jesus was a local citizen of Galilea and did not subscribe to the Jewish casuistic morality of laws. Therefore, he became a victim in his fight against Judaism. After the Council of the disciples by Paulus, the enmity between Christians and Jews was sealed. Early Christian texts with antisemitic content are quoted (the Barnabas Letter, fragments of the Gospel of Petrus, the Sibyllinen and the writings of Markion). Later on, writers in mainly Greek and Latin continue with criticism of Judaism and antisemitic stereotypes. Here the writings of Aristeides, Ariston of Pella, Iraneus, the Letter of Diognet, and many others are discussed.
