Scope and Content
Reprint of two articles from the monthly magazine “Nachalath Z'wi : eine Monatsschrift für Judentum in Lehre und Tat” of the Rabbi Hirsch Society (Rabbiner-Hirsch-Gesellschaft.) The first article ("Das Schlagwort vom zersetzenden Judischen Geist" by Rabbi Raphael Breuer) counters the claim that Judaism is a negative force in German society. It highlights the contributions of many Jewish artists, thinkers, and scientists to German culture, especially Heinrich Heine’s. The second article (“Judenhaß” by Rabbi Hermann Klein) is an analysis of the roots of antisemitism. The importance of the Torah and its influence in Jewish life is emphasized. The author questions if the lack of religious life is the main reason for the present desperate situation of the Jews in Germany.
