Scope and Content
Publication of a speech given by antisemitic politician and publisher Max Liebermann von Sonnenberg at the “Deutscher Reformverein” on January 23rd, 1885 in Leipzig. Sonnenberg criticizes the various political parties (Fortschrittspartei, Conservativepartei, etc.) and tells his audience that new times call for the creation of new parties. He further criticizes Jewish influence in the stock market, whose profits he calls dangerous. This is in contrast to capital that is reinvested into companies, factories or real estate, which is productive. The plight of the farmers and their exploitation (mainly by Jews) is the next topic of the speech, as well as crafts and honest trade. The remaining part of the speech gives an overview of antisemitism, its purpose and goals, with a special emphasis on the city of Leipzig. Sonnenberg claims that the Jew should be isolated economically, and excluded from public life. The meeting closes because of rising unrest among the participants. In the appendix various press reports on the meeting are printed.
