Ahlem
Extent and Medium
1 electronic resource (16 pages)
Scope and Content
The publication urges German Jews to be more engaged in agriculture and crafts. One argument is the high unemployment in the free professions after World War I. Another is the yearning of the younger generation to escape from busy city life and engage in outdoor activities and deeper meaning. The “Israelitische Erziehungsanstalt zu Ahlem” (near Hannover) is training and educating young people to become gardeners and craftsmen for more than 15 years. It was founded in 1893 by Moritz Simon. The school comprises a gardening school, a boarding school, a housekeeping school and apprentice workshops for various crafts.
