Scope and Content

Publication of a lecture given by Adolf Damaschke. The fast rise in government debts from 1870 to 1891 is criticized and the dire social circumstances are discussed. The various shortcomings of Manchester Liberalism are addressed. The next topic discussed is antisemitism. The author is giving arguments against common assumptions on antisemitism e.g. Jews are responsible for poverty, meaning a country with many Jews is poorer than one with few. The author mentions the examples of Australia, Spain and Portugal where this is not the case. The Austrian member of parliament, Kronawetter, is quoted: ”antisemitism is the socialism of the ignorant man.” Small businesses and craft people see that they cannot win against big capital and their frustration turns into hating the personification of capitalism – Jews. The author further claims that an essential characteristic of Jews is their tendency for extremes – either they excel or they are useless. They can hardly be found in the middle. The author further claims that capitalism is the root cause of present problems and Jews are no more to blame than their Christian brethren.
