Scope and Content
The file includes a typewritten report from December 13th, 1937 by the German Consul in Czernowitz, Fritz Schellhorn, addressed to the embassy in Bucharest, about the “Jewish Question” in the area of the Consulate (the file is in bad quality). It gives an overall view of the different Jewish groups in the Bukovina, their level of assimilation and education, socio-economic status, political influence and statistical data. It is described as the “Jewish Eldorado of Old Austria”. It estimates that the number of Jews in the Bukowina around 1930, when it was part of Romania, was around 100.00 in addition to 20.000 from Bessarabia. The other part of the file is a typewritten history of the artist association “Das junge Rheinland” founded on February 24th, 1919 (The young Rhineland). It was written about 50 years later by Irene Markowitz.
