Scope and Content

The Ludwig Dische papers are a collection of letters, drafts, copies, newspaper clips, and biographical information about famous Jews from Czernowitz, Bukovina. The file contains information about Karl Kramar, Vinzenz Cervinka and Josef Zamazal, who were sentenced to death for treason. Their death sentence was commuted to 15, 10 and 6 years respectively by Emperor Karl of Austria on December 13th, 1916. An attachment of the publication of the official announcement in the Neue Freie Presse is included. The printed verdict of the death sentence is included, as well as a letter from the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Ministry to the Defense Ministry about the pending verdict, and its implications on the public opinion abroad. The file also contains the military record for Markus Preminger from the Austro-Hungarian army from 1914-1917. There is a letter to the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of Defense by the military lawyer for Dr. Karl Kramar and the codefendants from January 25th, 1915 about the case, and the implications of not calling on Duke von Thun as a witness. Short highlights of a biased biography by Friedrich Wichtl "Dr. Karl Kramar, Anstifter des Weltkrieges" (1918) are attached. Finally there is the letter to the Minister of Defense, Freiherr von Georgi, from November 6th, 1916, asking for clemency (addressed to the Emperor) by Karl Kramar and his lawyers.
