  • Francois Darlan was a French naval officer who rose through the French Navy, ultimately becoming Admiral of the Fleet. He was a major figure of the Vichy regime in France during World War II, and was its deputy leader for a time. His aim above all was to keep and to save the French fleet from destruction. For this reason he kept most of the ships in North Africa. The Anglo- American coalition attacked and destroyed a part of these ships and forced Darlan to cooperate with them against the Nazi regime. Soon after that Darlan was assasinated by a French Anti-Nazi activist whose aim was to unite all the French forces against Nazi Germany -- (Wikipedia)
