Scope and Content
The file is the second part of the biography of Henry Hellman, a social democrat, from Berlin. He continues to talk about his father, who became more and more depressed, one reason being the rising antisemitism, and who hanged himself in a hotel room. He reminisces about the writer Woehrle including background and biographical anecdotes. After his father’s death he is offered a “volunteer” position in the parliamentary office of the Social Democrats in the Reichstag and urged to finish his studies. He spent a lot of time in artist coffee houses of Berlin like Romainsches café, Petersurger cafe and Die Lunte, and got entranced by their bohemian life style. An index of persons mentioned in the biography is included at the beginning of part one.
