Scope and Content

The file is a summary report of the project "Jews in nationalsocialist Thuringia 1933-1945". Its aim was to document Jewish life in Thuringia during Nationalsocialism. The results of the research project should be incorporated in educational material for schools. The file includes a report on the project, goals and structures of the project, sources (list of archives), methods of research, lists supporters and partners (Anita Shapira, Wolfgang Nossen). Further explanations are given (e.g a rich field for data gathering are financial records of Jews collected by tax authorities, even when they were already transported to ghettos (incl. Vermögenserklärung). It mentions uncertainties in number since many Jews were not part of the Jewish community but nevertheless targeted by the Nazis for racial reasons. Two focal points were remembrance and awareness. In addition there is an extensive appendix with statistics, files of documents from the federal archives in Gotha, initial correspondence with Israeli partners, copies of transfer protocols and an official evaluation of the project. It shows Jewish population records sorted by counties and deregistration records. Some records provide an explanation of status and fate of each individual.
