Scope and Content

The file contains a copy of the report on “Race Relations in Chicago” written by the “Mayor’s Commission on Human Relations for 1945”. In the report, the Commission presents its work on the situation of African American citizens in several fields of public life, highlighting the improvement of status in the employment sector, but deploring the shortage of housing. Other sectors analyzed by the Commission were Recreation, Health and Welfare, Law and Order. Furthermore, the report informs on the “Chicago Conference on Home Front Unity” held in May and June 1945 with the participation of several hundred civic organizations as well as on its Public Information and Education activities. The reports on activities is followed by information on the Commission’s Staff Personnel and its Financial statement.
