Scope and Content

The file contains the 35 pages of opinion and judgement by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia (Civil Action No. 1316) on the case “Stell v. Savannah-Chatham Board of Education” that opposed Ralph Stell and the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education in 1963. The class-action lawsuit demanded the desegregation of the schools in the city of Savannah, after students of African American background were denied to enroll Savannah High School. The printed document has been labelled and distributed by the “National Putnam Letters Committee” founded by Carleton Putnam in order to counter the politics of desegregation. Thus, the case “Stell v. Savannah-Chatham Board of Education” is seen as a “milestone” for the segregation politics pursued by Carleton Putnam.
