Scope and Content
The file contains the copy of an undated booklet of eight pages published probably after the end of World War II in the 1940s by the National Urban League in New York. The booklet contains three texts written by famous African American Civil Rights Activists on the African Americans’ and the American Jews’ joint battle against hate and discrimination. In his text “A revelation of Base Qualities”, Lester B. Granger in his role as the Executive Secretary of the National Urban League criticizes Anti-Semitic statements made by African Americans and calls the African American minority to fight against Anti-Semitism in order to win the support of all religious groups for its own struggle. The second text is entitled “Bigotry cannot be quarantined” and was written by Willard S. Townsend, the “International President of the United Transport Service Employees of America, CIO (Red Caps’ Union)”. He warns of the public campaigns of the “American Defense Society” whose Anti-Semitic and Anti-unionist stance is directed also against the African American population. Finally, the President of the “Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters”, A. Philip Randolph, calls the African American community to perceive the Jews as an Ally in a joint battle.
