Scope and Content

The Jewish community in Italy has not been prepared for the installment of anti-Semitic legislation in 1938. The legislation closely followed its German inspiration, for example in the exclusion of Jews from public and economic life. Also citizenships have been revoked and the people exiled from Italy fall into distinct categories. Italian Jews have been forced to search for a new home overseas, the US, Palestine and South America, due to the many restrictions the Italian government has put on them. Various committees for the relief of refugees exist all over Italy and who are helping the Jewish communities and refugees cope with the situation. The list of prohibitions and exclusions is long and had a disheartening effect on the Jewish community in Italy, forcing many to convert.
