Scope and Content
In this letter addressed to the American Jewish Committee, Werkhovsky claims that the origins of the Protocols are to be found in Georgii Butmi's efforts to popularize them in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. He had been given a manuscript by French antisemites which was the basis of the Protocols. He had the manuscript translated into Russian and published under the name 'Enemies of Humankind'. The attached article published in the Jewish Daily Bulletin in January 1935, discusses Werkhovsky's letter. Under the headline of 'Proof Protocols are false given Chicago Paper by Russian Priest, the article explains the situation in Russia at the end of the 19th century and that after the Dreyfus affair in 1895 Butmi brought back a manuscript from France which was the 'original' of the Protocols.
