Extent and Medium
1 electronic resource (6 pages)
Scope and Content
The file contains handwritten notes and a newspaper report regarding the coverage of 'Der Kaufmann von Venedig' (The Merchant of Venice). In 1899 the 'Wiener Volkszeitung' reported about the theater play 'the Merchant of Venice' and as the journalist wrote, the theater was sold out every day. Furthermore he explains that Grillpanzer showed in his play "the Jew in his full 'glory', as the Jew got presented finally as what he is". Unfortunately the journalist of this newspaper cutting was mistaken, as not Grillpanzer but Shakespeare wrote 'the Merchant of Venice'. A letter of a reader is attached, which he signed with William Shakespeare and saying: that Grillpanzer could be never able to write such an anti-Semitic play and that he would be ashamed of this accuse if he would be still alive. In addition further anti-Semitic poems by Wlhelm Grimm and Franz Grillparzer can be seen.
