Scope and Content
The file contains extracts of the Pamyat Trial translated into Hebrew, summaries of the trial in Russian, the court's decision and an appeal on behalf of the defendant. The Hebrew transcripts of the trial are an unofficial translation. The first meeting deals with the definition of antisemitism. D.Vasiliev tries to prove that publishing in his newspaper the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is not an antisemitic act because the Protocols were an authentic document written by a Zionist thinker Asher Ginsberg (Ahad Ha’am). He also insists that the “Protocols” are not an antisemitic document. The claimant attorney Kiseliova read out a 21 pages long document of explanations. Her conclusion is that “Pamyat” is not an antisemitic but an antizionist newspaper. After her presentation the meeting has been closed and announced to be continued on the July 29. During the second meeting, the court concentrated on the “Protocols” authenticity and the meaning of the word “anisemitizm”. All the experts: Z. Krakhmalnikova, A.V. Krylov and even A.L. Dajiani confirm that the “Protocols” are not an authentic document. Z. Krakhmalnikova claimed that the “Protocols” are not only antisemitic, but also they are of antichristian and antihuman nature. Definitely, this document is a falsification and it has antisemitic and fascistic nature and even was a base of Hitler’s doctrine. Therefore the “Jewish Gazette” was right mentioning the “Pamyat” newspaper in the list of antisemitic publications. Furthermore Russian articles, copies of the "Pamyat" newspaper publication (№ 1&2, Jan.1991) of the "Protocols" regarding questions to the experts about "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" are attached. In addition the "Pamyat" newspaper and its owner and editor in chief Vasiliev D.D. accuses "The Jewish Gazette" of libel and demands 20 000 000 ruble compensation for the insult. The respondent insists that publication of Protocols of the Elders of Zion by the "Pamyat" newspaper is an antisemitic act and this was a reason of including "Pamyat" in the list of antisemitic publications. After hearing witnesses and experts the court decides to reject the claimant demands. Including "Pamyat" in the list of antisemitic publications was an opinion of "The Jewish Gazette". It does not insult any honor or dignity D.D. Vasiliev. The "Pamyat" newspaper and D.D. Vasiliev to pay legal costs of 250 000 ruble.
