Scope and Content

In the introductory remarks of the publication an overview of Lithuanian history is provided. The Soviet occupation and subsequent German aggression resulted in the loss of lives of thousands of Lithuanians. The colonization attempts by the Germans are discussed next. Labor service, German reprisals, and the creation of underground movements are described in separate chapters. The conclusion is full of pessimism for a free Lithuania, the Red army had already crossed the eastern boundaries of the country by July 1944. The appendix includes documents organizing the deportations of “Anti-Soviet” elements, a joint declaration of the Lithuanian political parties and combat organizations and the declaration of the supreme committee of liberation.
