Scope and Content
The publication is a special edition of the “Sozialdemokrat” a publication of social democrats from the Sudetenland. It is dedicated to the memory of Hans Vogel, the head of the Socialdemocratic Party of Germany, who had died on October 6th, 1945. The text provides an overview of his life, important events and details of his work for the party. It illuminates his character and convictions. It also remembers Otto Wels, 1873 – 1939, the chair of the social democrats. Together they worked in Prague to create underground publications that were smuggled into Germany. The appeal he wrote after July 20th, 1944, is reprinted. The appendix contains the obituary of Hans Vogel by Erich Ollenhauer and words of farewell by leading members of the British Labour Union.
