Scope and Content
The publication provides a detailed overview of the position and resistance efforts undertaken by the Catholic church during the Second World War, particularly in France. It provides quotes by various politicians and intellectuals commenting on the position and views of the Pope. Many of his views expressed in letters on the occasion of the German invasions of European countries are reprinted. The bravery of French cardinals during the occupation is shown through examples in the following chapter. Excerpts from various catholic publication addressing resistance are reprinted and discussed next. The last part is a list of victims with short biographies. The life and fate of Soeur Helene (Studler) is eulogized. Catholic resistance in other European countries is the focus of a separate chapter as well as Jewish and protestant testimonies on the efforts of the church.
