Das "Greuelmärchen"
Extent and Medium
1 electronic resource (34 pages)
Scope and Content
The “Greuelmärchen” (tale of horror) was written by a senior German state employee in 1935 to his university colleague, who has been removed from his teaching position. It gives an overview of all the mistakes the young Weimar Republic made to enable Hitler’s rise to power. The dire economic situation of the Third Reich is shown and further outcomes for the future are discussed - the most likely option being war. The author is optimistic that soon the simmering resentment will overcome the dictatorship, and a state of law and order will return.
