Scope and Content
The booklet published in 1942 recounts the firm stand of Norway’s teachers against efforts by the Nazis to enforce their ideology in the school system. After being abused in a camp 500 teachers were sent in cattle cars to Trondheim, and put in the cargo hold aboard an old, abandoned ship the S.S. Skjerstad built in 1904, with a capacity of 250 persons. On April 15th, 1942 the “death voyage” began which lasted 12 days. The differences in Nazi and prewar education is discussed, providing a historical background of the Norwegian public school system and Nazi efforts to attack it.
