Scope and Content
The Third survey on the affairs of the continental churches (September 1935 to March 1936) discusses the situation of the Protestant Churches in Germany and their position towards the government. An appeal by Dr. Zöllner, the chairman of the Reichs Church committee, from October 18th, 1935 is reprinted. It received mixed receptions in Germany. Three lines of action can be observed whenever arbitration among the churches is attempted: Coercion, opposition by the “Bekenntnis Church” (Pastor Niemöller) and continued effort of conciliation. Between February 17th to 22nd a synod held at Bad Oeynhausen by the German Evangelical Church on church leadership released a set of resolutions which are reprinted in the pamphlet, as well as a statement by Dr. Niemöller titled “Die Staatskirche ist da!” (The State Church is Here!)
