Biographical History

Gottfried Klapper (1917-2003) was a German theologian and high ranking official of the Lutheran Church. From the mid-1950s to early 1960s he had served as minister at the Hamburger Lutheran Church in East London.

Scope and Content

Covering mainly Klapper’s time in London the correspondence concerns arrangements for a public talk by Alfred Wiener for the youth group of the Hamburger Lutheran Church (1958); the exchange of books; several Church events, including a visit of Otto Frank (father of Anne Frank); an enquiry by Wiener to find a host family for a friend’s daughter; and Arbeitskreis 61, a loose cultural association of London-based Germans. Contained are information sheets and a leaflet from the evangelical academy in Loccum.
