Biographical History

Concerned by the growth of Antisemitism the Jewish Council to Combat Fascism and Antisemitism was founded in Australia by a group of mainly East European Jews in May 1942. It campaigned for the state of Israel and against the immigration of former Nazis to Australia.

Scope and Content

Correspondence regarding various issues including the screening of several individuals from Germany (including the ambassador in Australia), Czechoslovakia, Great Britain (A. K. Chesterton), Australia, Ukraine, and Hungary concerning their political affiliations. Other issues pertain to the emigration of Dutch or German citizens to Australia, international reactions on a speech given by German chancellor Konrad Adenauer, Antisemitism in West Germany, the situation of Jewry in South Africa, and the Council’s Wiener Library membership. Briefly discussed is also Ian Fleming’s newly published novel Goldfinger and potential antisemitic references included.

The correspondence contains a photograph of an unidentified male individual (June 13 1957).
