Biographical History

Walter Manes, was one of the sons of Philipp Manes, the German Jewish fur trader who was deported to Terezin and perished in Auschwitz. Walter Manes managed to escape Nazi Germany through employment opportunities as a musician in Shanghai in 1938/ 1939. He remained with his wife in China until 1948 when he emigrated to USA.

Scope and Content

This collection of personal papers of Walter Manes documents his life from youth to the immediate post-war years. In addition to the documentation, an unpublished autobiographical account (1548/1) puts the papers in context.
