Scope and Content

The fonds consists of the personal papers and photographs of Herbert Steinhouse, documenting his life and work as a journalist, broadcaster, novelist and CBC producer and executive. It includes material relating to his service with the RCAF; education at McGill University and the New School for Social Research; involvement with the Oskar Schindler story; work as a freelance correspondent in Paris in the 1940s and 1950s; participation in the United Nations' special publicity mission to Southeast Asia in 1952; employment by Unesco as the editor-producer of its "World Review" weekly radio programme; literary manuscripts of his novel "Ten Years After" ("The Time of the Juggernaut" in the United States) and other creative writings; non-fiction manuscripts and research on broadcasting; organizations to which he belonged; and his work with the CBC, including radio and television scripts, personal and professional correspondence, policy documents, and subject clippings files.
