Biographical History

Harry Karet was a member of the family business H Karet & Sons Ltd, which operated in London's East End (and was run by his only brother, Sydney). The Karet family originally hails from Eastern Europe, and that business was established in the 1870s. The company dealt in hardware and ironware and supplied many local small businesses in London as a wholesaler. Harry Karet was attempting to run sales through additional channels (outside of small London shops) and had connections with other companies, occasionally selling abroad if there was a demand for particular items. Chaim and the Flaksbaum family, who were merchants with cutlery stores, might have had business ties to H Karet & Sons Ltd.

Archival History

This letter is part of a collection of letters, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, that were stored in plastic bags in the back of a cupboard and retrieved by Tony Samuel's parents. Tony Samuel gathered these after his father's death and in 2023 agreed to digitally donate Chaim (Max) Flaksbaum's letter to Kazerne Dossin.

Scope and Content

This collection contains a card to Tony Samuel's great uncle, Harry Karet (1906-1999), sent by Chaim (Max) Flaksbaum. The card conveys Jewish New Year's greetings. "I am blessing you and your family with G'mar Chatimah Tovah (literal translation: 'a good final sealing') - said at Yom Kippur, referring to the Book of Life) May God give you a year of life, blessing and success, wealth and honor," the message (in Hebrew) says. In 1938, 14 September marked the Jewish New Year. However, Yom Kippur occurred on 5 October. This card's message may be a little late in some ways, but there may be good reasons for it, and the sentiments are still valid for the entire month leading up to and following New Year's.
