Ленинградский областной Государственный архив в Выборге

Archive of the Finnish Viipuri (Vyborg) Province was opened in 1934. In the times of Soviet-Finnish war in 1939-1940 and Soviet-German War in 1941-1945 most of the documents of the archive were transfered to the town of Mikkeli in Finland or Kostroma in Soviet Union.

In 1940, after the end of the Soviet-Finnish war, Vyborg archive became a branch of NKVD of Karelian-Finnish Republic, and branch of Central NKVD archive in Moscow. It was evacuated into the city of Kostroma in 1941 and returned to Vyborg in 1945 after the end of the war.

In 1951 Archive was restructured into Leningrad Oblast State Archive in Vyborg. In 1964 it became branch of Leningrad Archive of the October Revolution.

Archive holds various documents referring to the history of Petersburg/Leningrad region and Finland in the era of Russian Empire, Soviet State and post-Soviet time.

Archive is divided into 6 departments:

• Fond completion.

• Securing, Storage and Registration of the Documents

• Usage and Publication of the Documents

• Information and Search Systems and Automatic Archive Technologies

• Document Securing and Registration Laboratory

• Maintenance

On 01.01.2009 the archive had 3207 record groups and 1064505 archival folders.

Archive stores documents from pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet period of various state instututions and civil organizations referring to the Peterburg/Leningrad Oblast, partly to the city itself, and also most of the documentation of the Vyborg Gubernia. The oldest documents from the archive are dated for 1635, these as well as other documents from XVII - XIX centuries were inherited after the Vyborg Provincial archive and are mainly in Swedish and Finnish languages. These are mainly local administration and institutions documents. Documents from the Soviet period are referring to the political, social, economic and cultural history of the region. For the Holocaust researchers interesting should be record group devoted to the participants of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.
