The State Archives in Leipzig were established in 1954 as a branch of the Landeshauptarchiv Dresden and was originally named Landesarchiv Leipzig. In 1965, with their establishment as a separative institution, the Archives were renamed Staatsarchiv Leipzig. In 1995 the Zentralstelle für Genealogie was intergrated in the Staatsarchiv Leipzig. On 1 January 2005 the Staatsarchiv Leipzig was joined with the State Archives of Chemnitz, Dresden and Freiberg, altogether considered the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv.
