  2. Hermann Goering's Art Purchases (Fond 211)

    Contains photocopies of art collections dating from the period 1940-1945 concerning transactions in the Netherlands and other European countries; some concern the collection J. Goudstikker. Reichsfeldmarshall Göring (1893-1946) bought art in large quantities in occupied Europe. These transactions were partially organized by his private assistant, Gisela Limberger, Dr. K. Mühlmann and the director of the art collections of Goering, Walter Andreas Hofer.

  3. Jozef Bryf memoir

    Consists of one CD containing the handwritten memoirs, in Yiddish, of Jozef Bryf. The memoirs, written in the 1980s, cover the period of 1920-1980 and describe Mr. Bryf's childhood in Łaskarzew, Poland, the German bombardment of Warsaw in 1939, and escaping with his future wife, Hanna Bleiwais, into the Soviet occupied territories. In 1941, the couple was deported to Siberia for forced labor, but after a year, moved to Tashkent, where they spent the war. After the liberation of the area, they moved back to Poland, from which they escaped in 1946 and ultimately joined family in France.

    Contains source materials for research of Jules Schelvis, a Holocaust survivor, on the death camp of Sobibór. Includes articles; reports; copies of evidence; documentations, illustrations; and eye witness reports. He published his findings in his work "Vernietigingskamp Sobibór /Death camp Sobibór " (Amsterdam 1993) and "Sobibór: A History of a Nazi Death Camp- Jules Schelvis" (New York, 2007, Published by Berg Publishers in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).

    The Vogel and Baer family consists of Berta (Bertha) Baer Vogel of Untergrombach, Germany, her ex-husband Albert Vogel, their children, Inga and Ellen, and extended family. The daughter of a Jewish ironmonger, Berta lived in Karlsruhe, Germany with her family until her and Albert separated in 1930 and she immigrated to Basel, Switzerland. The Vogel and Baer family correspondence comprises letters primarily from Inga, who was a student in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to her Berta, Ellen, and her grandparents in Basel, Switzerland between 1938 and 1941.   8. Star of David badge with Juif printed in the center

    Star of David patch of the type worn to identify a Jew in German occupied France. Germany occupied France in the early summer of 1940. A decree was issued on March 27, 1942, making it mandatory for Jews to wear the Judenstern badges at all times. The badges marked the Jews as outsiders and made them easy to identify. The German occupation of France ended on August 25, 1944, when German forces surrendered to the Allies.

  11. Nazi flag acquired by an American soldier

    Nazi flag acquired by 23 year old Edward J. Paukovits, Sr. , a US soldier, around April 28-30, 1945, in Ulm, Germany. His unit was stationed in Goppingen, and, while passing through Ulm on the way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Paukovits saw the huge flag still flying atop a building. He had the driver stop the jeep. The flag was anchored to the finial, so Paukovits climbed the pole and took down the flag. Paukovits was assigned to the 815th Quartermaster Battalion.     Contains selected papers of Marcel Nyns and the Secretaires Generaux (Committee of Secretary-generals), the highest representation of the Belgian administration under German occupation. This department was responsible for education, including the implementation of excluding Jews from the educational system under German occupation. Records include correspondence, minutes, and reports relating to the faith of the Jews living in occupied Belgium, especially concerning their education.

Collection includes records relating to the World Jewish Congress, Joint Distribution Committee, refugees, the Belgian War Relief Society, the situation in the occupied countries 1940-45, and repatriation of displaced persons.

Abraham (b. 1924 in Bardekov, Czechoslovakia, present day Slovakia), survived in the woods of Czechoslovakia, running and on false papers; Nelly (b. Berlin Germany) fled with her mother Yetti Friedman [Feuerlicht] and father to Belgium, from where Nelly and Yetti were able to depart for the United States.     A copy of the “KZ: Bildbericht aus fünf Konzentrationslagern” [KZ: Pictorial report of five concentration camps] pamphlet published in Germany in 1945. It was published quickly by the American War Information Office to increase awareness of the atrocities that had occurred. It contains post-liberation photographs at Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, Nordhausen, and Ohrdruf concentration camps and the site of the Gardelagen massacre.

  18. Borge and Tove Siebern scrapbooks

    Consists of five scrapbooks assembled while Bjorn Siebern, former Danish policeman and member of the resistance, and his wife, sometime between 1964 and 1973. They contain a combination of wartime photographs, documents, and three-dimensional objects documenting all aspects of the German occupation of Denmark. Some documents relate directly to Mr. Siebern's work, including ID cards, false IDs and forgery stamps. He assumed multiple identities during the war.   19. Prayer book

    Megillat Esther, the scroll of Esther, read on the Jewish holiday of Purim carried by Anton Spitzer when he moved to Iasi, Romania, in 1931. Shortly before he was taken away by the Nazis in 1944, Anton hid the scroll in a cellar in the Iasi ghetto. He recovered it when he returned to Iasi after the war in 1945. The family would read from this scroll on Purim in Iasi until they immigrated to Israel in 1950.
