  1. William Howard photographs

    The collection consists of 13 photographs taken by William Howard shortly after the liberation of a concentration camp.

  2. Joe Ross collection

    The papers consist of a letter written from Buchenwald concentration camp to Copenhagen, Denmark, and a postcard written from Sachsenhausen concentration camp to Josefka Kuspumerek in Radom, Poland.

  3. Szczukowski family photographs

    Consists of eight pre-war photographs of the family of Mendel and Hynda Szczukowski, originally of Łódź, Poland. Of their seven children in Poland (an eighth, Esther, emigrated to Poland in 1916), five perished during the Holocaust, as did Mendel. Hynda passed away in 1932. Also includes post-war photographs of Mojzesz Szczukowski in a displaced persons camp in Hofgeisman, Germany, participating in the sport of boxing.

  4. Josef Pistiner family collection

    The collection consists of badges, wallets, watercolors, correspondence, documents, photographs, and printed materials related to the experiences of Josef Pistiner and his family, including his parents, Aron and Taube, and brother, Max, before the Holocaust in Galicia, Bukovina, and Berlin and during the Holocaust in Berlin, their 1939 emigration via China to the United States, as well as documents from Josef Pistiner’s service in the U.S. Army during World War II, and restitution files from the 1960s-1970s.

  5. Lester Macharzyuski collection

    Contains correspondence written from various concentration camps and POW camps; photo reproductions (cigarette cards), mass produced by the NSDAP of pro-Nazi propaganda; a copy of the "Chicago Daily News" newspaper, October 31, 1939, with the article "Duce Removes Pro-Nazis."

  6. Newman family photographs

    Contains five post-war photographs from the collection of Edie Newman. Included are photographs of Mrs. Newman with friends at the Pocking displaced persons camp, a photograph of Irwin Newman, and a photograph of Mrs. Newman on the General Eltinge ship on the way to the United States in 1949.

  12. Sidney Gritz collection

    Consists of one article written about the life and wartime experiences of Brigadier General Sidney Gritz, who as an engineering officer tasked with clearing mines in advance of the Third Army, was a member of one of the first units to enter the Buchenwald concentration camp. Also includes a DVD-ROM in which Gritz, a devout Jew, talks about his experiences to a group of school children.

  13. Donald Norton Pitts collection

    The collection documents the experiences of Donald Norton Pitts, who served as a foreign service officer with the State Department in Warsaw, Poland in 1950. Included are notes, reports, and writings, primarily about the political climate in Poland; diary; correspondence; identification card; clipping; metal dish; and negatives taken while Donald was stationed there. Also included are copy negatives and prints documenting atrocities against Jews in Poland during the Holocaust.

    Documents, correspondence, and photographs concerning the Zehngut and Weiss families in Europe; papers concerning the emigration of Inge and Kitty Weiss among the 50 Children rescued from Vienna by Brith Sholom and Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus as well as the emigration of their parents Stella Zehngut Weiss and Leon Weiss; and related materials from their lives in the United States including school records, government documents, a draft of a memoir written by Inge, and a Camp Ray-Oot swimming medal.

  16. Louis W. Collier collection

    Consists of material related to Louis W. Collier's experiences as a member of the American occupying forces in post-war Europe, particularly his role as director of the Werl-Westf. displaced persons (DP) camp for non-Jewish Poles in Germany. Includes correspondence with his family; photographs; a bound, handwritten log of camp activities illustrated with photos; and a photo album of handmade crafts. Also includes Polish emblems, one mounted on a wooden plaque, and one with a chain.
