Biographical History

Bertha Lurey Elston was born in Chicago in 1910. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1943, where she worked for the London edition of the newspaper Stars and Stripes. She attended officers candidate school and in July 1945 became second lieutenant. She was discharged in February 1946.

Archival History

The armband was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1994 by the Estate of Bertha Lurey Elston.

Rectangular body constructed of red wool fabric with blue piping along top and bottom; on recto, at center is black swastika with yellow embroidered border sewn against white circular background with yellow embroidered border; on verso, rectangular paper label with text in blue and black ink that reads "DRZM / Hersteller: / A4343 / Reichszeugmeisterel der NSDAP. / H No 464472."
