  1. Saly Mayer Archives.

    This fonds contains archival material produced by Saly Mayer, who was the principal liaison between the JDC and the Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied Europe – including Belgium. Nr. 29 contains a file titled “Belgium, 1943-1945”, in which we find correspondence and reports on the activities of the Comité National de Défense des Juifs en Belgique, financed by Saly Mayer and the JDC.

    This fonds contains several files on Belgium, located in the various Series in the section “Geographic files”.   4. Jewish Labor Committee Collection Photographs.

    This collection is of great interest for this guide. It contains photographs on aid, cultural activities, the children adoptation program etc. provided by the Jewish Labor Committee in the immediate postwar years. In “Subseries B: Holocaust and Jewish Life in Europe under the Nazis” of “Series I” we find photographs and “mixed materials” on Belgium, 1939-1945 (box 1 folder nr. 9). They mostly consist of poor quality copy prints of news service photographs.   5. Edward S. Goldstein: Jewish Labor Committee Research Files.

    Box 2, folder nr. 60 (“France and Belgium: Children’s Homes and other JLC-Supported institutions”) contains a brief overview concerning children’s institutions supported by the JLC in France and Belgium. The documents date back to 1948.

  6. Fonds Maxime Steinberg.

    The Maxime Steinberg archives are essentially composed of thematic files containing copies of original archival documents, copies of periodicals and scientific literature assembled by Steinberg within the framework of his historical research. 11 boxes are related to the Comité de Défense des Juifs and the Association des Juifs en Belgique; some contain original archival material. 13 boxes consist of files concerning individuals – some hold just one page with biographical information, while others are fairly extensive and include many copied documents. 43 boxes contain the documentation file...

    In this fonds we note personal correspondence (1943-1952) of Henri Mandel, as well as documents of a private nature.   9. Document collection – Varia.

    For the sake of completeness, this description contains information on the various personal papers, separate archival documents and other material from the “Document collection” of the Wiener Library, too limited in extent to describe separately. The collection constitutes the largest archive of personal papers relative to Jewish refugees from occupied Europe.   10. Collection of Historical Photographs.

    This is the largest collection in the world of historical photographs related to the Holocaust. It documents Jewish life before and during the Holocaust, the life of survivors in the post-war period, but also various activities and ceremonies commemorating the Holocaust all over the world. Searching for keywords such as ‘Belgium’, ‘Brussels’, ‘Antwerp’ etc. yields a result of over 1000 relevant images, from various collections.   11. Archives in Belgium.

    For the sake of completeness we mention this collection, which consists of copies of archival material from various official and institutional archives in Belgium (such as state, provincial or city archives). At the time of writing it mostly contains material from the city archives and provincial archives of Antwerp.

  12. Maxime Steinberg Collection.

    This collection contains photocopies of original archival documents collected by Maxime Steinberg and used to write his magnum opus L’étoile et le fusil. The documents concern topics such as Jewish resistance, rescue of Jews etc. during the German occupation.

    This fonds firstly contains several files with correspondence concerning i.a. economic relations between Israel and Czechoslovakia, immigration from Poland, the Israeli embassies in Warsaw and Prague, the International Genocide convention, the trials of Mordechai Oren and Simon Orenstein, the indemnisation of Czechoslovakian Jews who immigrated to Israel, … and roughly covering the years 1949-1952.   15. Righteous Among the Nations Collection.

    The files concern rescuers recognized as Righteous Among the Nations and honoured by Yad Vashem. It is only an indication of the actual number of rescuers, since it is based on the cases brought to the attention of Yad Vashem. Most Righteous were recognised thanks to the requests made by rescued Jews. By January 1st 2014, there were 1665 files of Belgian rescuers. There is a file for every rescue case, containing the documents gathered through the process of recognition. One will find correspondence, notes, sometimes photographs, and material related to the recognition ceremonies.

    The archive contains approx. 80.000 personal files (for 130.000 inhabitants). It contains reports on political events, social and ethnic groups (Greeks, Turks, Jews and other foreigners) and companies, juridical decisions, information on the antifascist activities, the Jewish community, cases related to full Italian citizenship and the special local form of citizenship (Cittadinanza Egea Italiana).

    The photographic archive of the JMG includes a large number of photographs that cover all aspects of Jewish life and tradition in Greece. The photographic material consists of original black-and-white photographs, printed copies of original pictures, colour photographs and slides.
