Streszczenie

Videotape testimony of Jacob P., who was born in Viseu de Jos, Romania in 1926, the youngest of eight children. He recalls his family's poverty; attending Jewish and Romanian schools; Hungarian occupation; German occupation in 1944; transfer to a ghetto in a larger town; deportation several months later with his family to Auschwitz; separation from all but one brother; transfer to Birkenau; his brother helping him; their transfer to Doernhau, Wu?stegiersdorf, and Waldenburg; separation from his brother in Flo?ssenburg; evacuation of the camp in April 1945; disappearance of the guards; and liberation by United States troops. Mr. P. recounts his reunion with two sisters and two brothers in Viseu de Jos; working for the United States Army in Germany; emigrating to the United States in 1948; serving in the United States Army in Korea; and marriage in 1958. Mr. P. discusses his reluctance to speak of his experience after American soldiers laughed at what he had said; the anguish of his memories; and efforts to forget the past.
