Biographical History
The organization "Liga do Walki z Racizmem" (League for the Struggle against Racism) was founded in Warsaw in 1946. This organization was an ideological continuation of the “Żegota” organization, and focused on the objective of fighting racism and all manifestations of anti-Semitism within the Polish post-war society. Main co-founders and activists were: Władysław Bartoszewski, Julius Górecki (chairman), Irena Sendlerowa, Tadeusz Rek, Adolf Berman, Marek Arczyński, Stanisław Dobrowolski, Kazimierz Kumaniecki, Jan Wesołowski, Józef Gójski, Tadeusz Manteuffel, Władysław Bieńkowski. The League brought together people of different political views in a common cause, Poles and Jews alike. The League operated mainly in the academic circles in Kraków and in Łódź. After the Kielce pogrom (July 4, 1946), the League issued its protest in a form of posters and leaflets, articles, and published its first issue of a periodical "Prawo Czlowieka" (The Rights of Man). In the 2nd half of 1946, Władysław Bartoszewski was arrested, and the paper "Prawo Czlowieka" was no longer published. In 1946-1948 many League members emigrated from Poland or withdrew from their public activity.
