Records created by the Prosecutor's Office of the Appeals Court in Kielce, Poland, and later transferred by the court’s archives to the IPN. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection from the IPN via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in July 2012.
Scope and Content
Records from trials at the appellate court in Kielce, 1945‒1950, for crimes by the Germans and their collaborators. Prosecutions based on the Decree of August 31, 1944 (Sierpniówka) of the Polski Komitet Wyzwolenia Narodowego (PKWN, Polish Committee of National Liberation), one of the world's first laws on liability for crimes of World War II. Decree also applied against former partisans of the anti-Communist Armia Krajowa, or Home Army, whom Communism propaganda portrayed as collaborators.
System of Arrangement
Arranged by individual court cases. Records are arranged in the original order of their acquisition from the source archive. The museum has acquired only selected records from Institute of National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej-Komisja Ścigania Zbrodni przeciwko Narodowi Polskiemu, or IPN). More information about this collection and other materials in the possession of the Institute of National Remembrance, including archival finding aids from the Archives of the Institute of National Remembrance, is available at the website: https://ipn.gov.pl
