Acquisition

Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Original records are kept by the Rahvusarhiiv (National Archives of Estonia). Digitization of records completed in the join project of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), the Yad Vashem and the Central Archives for the History of Jewish People in Jerusalem, Israel. The USHMM Archives received the digitized collection via the USHMM International Archival Programs Division in 2015.

Scope and Content

Schools records, correspondence, various regulations and reports related to the activities of the Jews in Estonia from 1890s-1941. The bulk of the collection consists of personal records of Jewish students who attended Jewish elementary schools in Tartu (Dept), regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education, the Jewish Cultural Board and other organizations on the school and extracurricular activities, educational tentative plans, and personal files of the Jewish university students, and appointments of lecturers of the Tartu University in Estonia during the interwar period.

System of Arrangement

Arranged in four series: 1. Records of Jewish primary schools, 1877-1938; 2. Correspondence, regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Welfare and various Jewish organizations; 3. Works created by students: historical maps and tables of Jewish history; 4. Tartu University (Tartu Ülikool), 1918-1944.
