      <p><![CDATA[The fonds’ inventories are systematized according to the structural-chronological principle.
Documents on “the Jewish question” contained in the pretura fonds may provisionally be divided into the following thematic groups: 1. Directives of the Romanian civilian and military authorities that defined the legal status of the Jewish population of Transnistria; these include copies of Governorate of Transnistria orders halting the use of Jews as Ukrainian language translators (1942); on setting up ghettos for the Jewish population and using Jewish specialists for work in institutions and enterprises in Transnistria, with the exception of Odessa; 2. Orders of local authorities dealing with the forced labor of the Jewish population, including a resolution of the Berezovka county prefecture (31 December 1943) to assign Jewish craftsmen among workshops of the county, and a list of needed Jewish specialists by district; correspondence of the transportation section of the Ochakov prefecture on using the Jewish population in the construction of bridges (1943); etc. 3. Documents on the situation of Jewish doctors and on hygiene and sanitary conditions in which the Jews of Transnistria lived, including orders that the Jewish doctor Armin Silinger be sent for a ninety-day mandatory work shift to the village of Kovalevka (f. R-1594, 1943) and that five Jewish doctors be sent for same at the Berezovka prefecture sanitary department (f. R-1594, 1943); 4. Materials on financial aid to the Jews of Transnistria from the Central Office of the Jews of Romania; 5. Various sorts of lists; 6. Financial documents, statistical data, and certificates

      <p><![CDATA[These were district organs of Romanian executive power that functioned from 1941-44 in the occupied territory included in the newly-created Governorate of Transnistria. They were headed by praetors and subordinate to their respective county prefectures ; and in turn held jurisdiction over village and city primarias. The preturas’ functions included, among other things, the organizing of ghettos.]]></p>
