Biographical History
Hlinka Guard (Hlinkova garda, abbrev. HG) was a paramilitary organization of the Hlinka Slovak People´s Party (Hlinkova slovenská ľudová strana). It was created in Summer 1938 and it was built according to the Nazi model.Even though there was an attempt to establish it as an organization with the compulsory membership for all adult citizens (except Jews) in 1939, this idea was soon changed and the membership in Guard was voluntary. It became a platform for radical members of the Party. The Hlinka Guard´s command structure was quite specific. The Highest Commander of the HG was Jozef Tiso followed in the chain of command by the Main Commander of the Hlinka Guard, who was in fact the top organizational commander. During the years 1938-1945 there were three Main Commanders of the Hlinka Guard: Karol Sidor, Alexander Mach and František Galan. The longest serving Main Commander of the Hlinka Guard was Alexander Mach. The Main Command of the Hlinka Guard was the main organizational command of the Hlinka Guard. It was situated in Bratislava as the top tier command with jurisdiction over all regional, district and local commands of the Guard. The HG was under close supervision of Nazi Germany which establised its adviser for the matters of HG Viktor Nageler in Bratislava. The Chief of the Staff of the Main Command of the Hlinka Guard was Otomar Kubala. In September 1944, Kubala gained the competences of the Main Commander of the HG, At the same time, in regards to the attempts to liquidate the Slovak National Uprising, the Special Units of the Hlinka Guard (Pohotovostné oddiely Hlinkovej gardy, POHG), were created in Slovakia.
