The purpose of the Association was to give aid to those Jews who, before the invasion of Belgium, had been residents of that country, whether citizens or not, and to help in their rehabilitation and/or repatriation.
The Comite Juif was officialy recognized by the government of Belgium in London. The organization also undertook the re-establish th diamond industry in Belgium, since many Jewish merchants and cutters had left the country to avoid persecution, and this had severly limited the flourishing of an important sector of the Belgian economy.
The Comite Belge was an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress and was in contact with Jewish communities in several countries.
The Comite also preferred to help Jews in hiding in Belgium during the occupation, and undertook major fund raising to assist these Jews and also those who fled to other countries and those coming back from camps. Children were a special concern of the Comite, as were the search for relatives, succor in re-establishing religious institutions, and in making Jewish life possible once again in Belgium.

In this fonds we firstly point out several files containing correspondence, namely correspondence of the Belgian Jewish Committee regarding the search for relatives (nr. 8; years 1944-1945), with various organisations concerning economic aid to the Jews in Belgium (nr. 1; 1943-1949) and with the Belgian Government in Exile and various organisations regarding donations and financial aid to the Belgian Jews (nr. 2; 1943-1945); correspondence and texts of speeches of Camille Huysmans regarding the Belgian diamond industry (nr. 3; 1943-1944) and correspondence of Henry Untermans concerning the rescue of Mrs. Perlberger and her three sons from Bergen-Belsen (nr. 4; 1943-1945). Nr. 6 contains documentation of the Committee with regards to the collection and transfer of donations to needy Jews in Belgium. In nr. 5 we find protocols of meetings of the Belgian Jewish Committee (regarding budgets, donations, the situation of Belgian Jews after the war) covering the years 1943-1945. Documents such as protocols, reports and correspondence of the Committee with various organisations in England and Belgium concerning the rehabilitation of the Jewish community can be found in nr. 7 (1943-1945). In nr. 9 we find lists of survivors, donors or deported, missing and deceased Jews from Belgium and the Netherlands, prepared by the Committee (1944-1945). Lastly, nr. 10 contains a telephone directory with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of members of the Committee in London.

מטרת הארגון היתה להעניק עזרה ליהודים אשר לפני הפלישה הגרמנית לבלגיה היו תושבים בבלגיה, בין אם אזרחים ובין אם לא. ולעזור בשיקומם וחזרתם למולדת.
הועד היהודי הבלגי הוכר באופן רשמי על ידי הממשלה הבלגית הגולה בלונדון. הארגון לקח על עצמו גם לשקם את תעשיית היהלומים בבלגיה מאחר ויהודים רבים ששימשו כסוחרים ויהלומנים נמלטו מהמדינה מחשש הרדיפות, דבר שפגע אנושות בכלכלה הבלגית.

הועד סייע גם ליהודים במסתור בבלגיה בזמן הכיבוש, וגייס כספים לעזרתם ולעזרת אלה שנמלטו מחוץ למדינה ועבור מי שחזרו מהמחנות. הילדים קיבלו תשומת לב עיקרית של הועד, בחיפוש של קרוביהם, שיקום הקהילה היהודית בבלגיה ובבניית חיים יהודים בחזרה בבלגיה.
