Scope and Content

The collection contains miscellaneous documents of the Joint Magyarországi Bizottsága (the Hungarian Committee of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) and the Országos Zsidó Segítő Bizottság (the National Jewish Aid Organization) between 1945 and 1950. The documents include the agenda and minutes of meetings of the Hungarian Committee of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee as well as the proposals of its various departments, its financial and operational reports, budgets, internal correspondence, correspondence with various Hungarian authorities as well as international correspondence. There are miscellaneous documents regarding the aid activities (clothes distribution, food supplies) and money transfers provided fro Hungarian Jews, including the help children received. There are also miscellaneous documents of the Health Care Department of the National Jewish Aid Organization and the Central Social Committee of the National Office of Hungarian Israelites regarding the aid activity of the above-mentioned organizations, including proposals, memoranda, reports, surveys, budgets and correspondence items. The collection contains the miscellaneous correspondence of László Benedek who served as head of the Medical Department of the Hungarian Representation of the Joint and head physician of the Jewish Hospital. Moreover, there are documents related to the labor and workshop organizer group and the operation of the Mutual Credit Society. The collection has several studies and notes on Hungarian Jewry and reports on emigration possibilities and emigration policies. Press materials addressing the work of Joint were also collected. Last but not least, a part of the collection documents reactions to and debates about Rezső Kasztner’s activities from the early postwar period.
