Archival History

The documents of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress were reacquired from the Hungarian National Archives.

Scope and Content

The collection includes miscellaneous materials of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress. It contains activity and financial reports for the years 1946 to 1949, materials from the Statistical Department as well as the correspondence of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress. The materials of the Statistical Department provide data on the demographic situation, family status, educational structure, mother tongue, generational structure and institutional network of Hungarian Jewish survivors alongside information on the aid provided to them. It also includes statistical summaries on the demographical losses in the years 1939 to 1945 and name lists of prominent victims. The statistical data are interpreted through tables and graphs which are in turn analyzed. Moreover, the collection includes the correspondence of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress with survivors seeking information about their family members but also with major local and international Jewish organizations. Another important part of the collection is its coverage of Hungarian press organs on the question of Hungarian war crimes and criminals in the years 1945 to 1949. Last but not least, the collection contains press selections of Holocaust-related articles published in a host of Hungarian and international press organs between 1945 and 1948. Next to trials of war criminals, the focus is on anti-Semitism and the “Jewish question”, labor service and the deportation of the Hungarian Jews, famous victims and survivors, the social, physical and mental problems of Holocaust survivors, questions of material and legal rehabilitation of Jews and conflicts over formerly Jewish-owned assets, the situation of destroyed and empty synagogues in Hungary, Holocaust memorial inauguration ceremonies, emigration, reviews of Holocaust-related as well as fascist publications, Hungarian Jews accused of collaboration and the reports on the trials held against them.
