History
Archive was established in 1929 as the Archive of the Communist Party in the Smolensk Oblast. In 1974 it has received the new building where it is located until today. In 1992 it was reorganised into State Archive of Contemporary History of Smolensk Oblast.

Archive holds the documents referring to the history of the Smolensk region from 1906 until the present day.
Mandates/Sources of Authority
Archive is operating on the basis of the decision of the Smolensk Oblast Administration from 30 November 2004, № 1058-r and decision of the Smolensk Oblast Administration from 2 June 2011 № 936.

Archive is divided into 3 departments:

- Information and Usage of the Documents
- Finance and Administration
Archival and Other Holdings
For the 1 January 2012 archive had 2759 record groups with 374707 archival folders and 1085 photodocuments folders.
Oldest documents from the archive are dated 1906. Most of them are referring to the Soviet period of the history of the Smolensk region: state and party administration and institutions, various political parties and movements (mainly prior to the 1917),
For the Holocaust researchers specially interesting are the documents referring to the partisan movement in the Smolensk Oblast during the World War II, memoirs and diaries of the partisans,

Reading Room of the Archive is opened:
Monday-Thursday: 9 am - 5 pm.
Friday: 9 am - 4 pm
(lunch break: 1-2 pm)
