History

Archive was established in 1919 as the Archive of the Novgorod Gubernya. In 1922 it was reorganized into the Novgorod Branch of the Central Gubernial Archive of the Russian Federal Soviet Republic. In 1930 it was reorganized into the Novgorod Branch of the Leningrad Oblast Archive and in 1932 into the Novgorod Branch of Leningrad Oblast Archival Authority. In 1944, due to the administration reform of the Soviet state, it became State Archive of the Novgorod Oblast.

In 2008 the Archive was united with the local former Communist Party Archive (from 1991 Archive of the Newest Political History of the Novgorod Oblast).

Geographical and Cultural Context

Institution holds archival resources from the Novgorod region, from the period between 1727 until today.

Administrative Structure

Archive is divided into 4 departments:

  • Use of documents

  • Securing, holding, state registration and managing of the documents

  • Fulfilling of the social and legal inquiries

  • Department of scholar reference system and automated archival technologies

Building(s)

Archive has two buildings.

Main one is located at 31 Dukhovskaya Str., 173003 Novgorod.

Second building is located at Novoluchanskaya Str. 10, 173001 Novgorod. It is a branch of Archive dealing with social and legal inquiries.

Opening Times

Reading Room is opened from Monday until Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with a 1-2 p.m. lunch brake. On Friday there is additional 'technological brake' between 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Conditions of Access

Archival documents and work in the reading room is possible on the basis of prior notice. Researchers should provide a letter stating their purpose of work (with the chronological scope of their research problem) from their home academic institutions. Students should provide Archive with the similiar letter from their home institutions.

Research Services

Archive Staff is responding to the geneological, social-legal and thematical inquiries of the guests.
