History

Archive was established in 2002, on the basis of the former Communist Party Kaluga Oblast Archive. Regional Communist Party organization started to collect its archival documentation in 1921, with the establishment of the Kaluga Branch of Istpart (History of the Party Institute). It collected the documents referring to the October Revolution of 1917 and later years. Istpart branch was operating in Kaluga until 1927. Communist Party Kaluga Oblast Archive was established in 1945. In 1971 the archive was transferred into its current location.

Archive contains documents referring to the history of Kaluga Oblast from 1917 until the present day.

Mandates/Sources of Authority

Archive is operating on the basis of decree of the Kaluga Oblast Governor from 29 May 2002, № 325.

Archival and Other Holdings

Today archive holds 4 064 Research Groups, containing around 700 000 archival folders.

The archive researchers may found documents produced by the all branches and institutions of the Revolutionary Committees, Communist (Bolshevik) Party and state in Kaluga oblast from the time of 1917 revolution and Civil War, party and state administration documents until the end of the Communist state.

Archive contains also large collection of 11 918 photographies referring to the history of the region.

Special interest for the Holocaust researchers may be documentation of Kaluga Oblast inhabitants Heroes of the Soviet Union, receivers of the "Slava" medal, soldiers and partisans taking part in 1941-1945 war, Jewish Resistance Committee in Kaluga Oblast. Other interesting documents can be found in one Research Group «История партизанского и подпольного движения в годы Великой Отечественной войны (1941-1945 гг.) на территории Калужской области» (History of the partisan and underground movevement in the years of Great National War (1941-1945) on the territory of the Kaluga Region).

Opening Times

Archive is opened:

Monday-Thursday: 8 am - 5.15 pm. Friday: 8 am - 4 pm : (lunch break: 1-2 pm)

Reading room is opened Monday-Thursday: 9.30 am - 4.30 pm.
