History

The State Archive in Szczecin (Staatsarchiv Stettin) was created by Prussian authorities in 1827. Till 1901 its seat was the Szczecin Castle. In 1901 the new archival building was inaugurated at Karkutschstrasse (today Świętego Wojciecha street). The Polish State Archive in Szczecin came into existence on August 1st 1945. Its primary task was to gather the records evacuated by the German archival authorities during the war (about 80% of archival holdings). This aim was reached partially, as some records disappeared or found their place in the Greifswald Archive.

Nowadays, The State Archive in Szczecin works on the ground of the The Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes.

The seat of the State Archive in Szczecin is the building at 23 Świętego Wojciecha (Saint Adalbert) street, former Korkutschstrasse, built by the German authorities.

Archival and Other Holdings

The State Archive in Szczecin possesses 1557 collections and archival founds, which makes 834 908 units and 10 158 running meters (as for the end of 2011 year). The oldest part of the archive contains the records of Pomeranian princes of Stettin and Wolgast branch, as well as the municipal records (among them the location charter of Szczecin dated 1293). There are numerous records of Prussian state administration from XIX an XX century, mainly of Presidium of Pomerania Province and Stettin Regency. The newest part of the holdings consists of the documentation of post-war Polish state administration, political parties, social organizations and economic institutions.

Opening Times

The State Archive’s holdings are available in the workroom open Monday - Tuesday 8.30 - 18.00, Wednesday – Friday 8.30 – 15.00.

Conditions of Access

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
