History

The state archive in Lublin was created for the first time in 1827 under the name of the Archive of Historical Records (Archiwum Akt Dawnych). In 1837 its most important holdings (records of the Crown Tribunal) were transferred to Warsaw. In 1887 the archive was dissolved and the documents transferred to Vilnius. The State Archive in Lublin was reopen according to the decree of the Regency Council from July 31, 1918. Its seat was the former convent of Visitation sisters at 10 Narutowicza street. After the World War II the holdings of the archive augmented after the incorporation of the municipal archive in 1950 and return of the historical records from Vilnius in 1962. In 1965 the archive was relocated to the building of the former Jesuit college.
