History

On February 15, 1900 the first Alkmaar municipal archivist, Cornelis Willem Porpoise, was appointed. Thereby laying the foundation for what is now the Alkmaar Regional Archive. One with more than 20 employees, among others manages the archives of individuals, companies, water authorities and 13 municipalities.

Records Management and Collecting Policies

In addition to the archives of the 11 participating municipalities, the Alkmaar Regional Archives also manages archives of churches, businesses, associations and families. They contain information through which local and regional activities in religious, economic, political, social and cultural fields can be reconstructed. These archives were obtained from individuals who considered the importance of preservation. The archive contains many different private archives, differing in size.

Archival and Other Holdings

The Alkmaar Regional Archive holds records of past and current civic administrations and associated agencies of Alkmaar, the communities around Alkmaar, and a number of predecessors of the water-board. The regional archive also preserves archives of non- governmental organizations as well as personal records and archives.

Opening Times

The Alkmaar Regional Archive is open from Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

The Alkmaar Regional Archive is within a 5 minute walking distance of the Alkmaar railway station Alkmaar.

Reproduction Services

You can make copies of books, magazines and copied sources (including microfiche) exhibited in the reading room. Requested archives, libraries and material are copied for you by the staff in the reading room.
